Unpack the question
Identify the command word, such as analyse, evaluate, compare or discuss, because each requires a different approach. Then identify the topic and any limits, such as a time period or specific texts. Many weak essays answer a slightly different question from the one that was asked.
Form a clear thesis
Your thesis is your answer to the question, stated in one or two sentences. It should be arguable: a reasonable person could disagree with it. Everything else in the essay exists to support it.
Plan your paragraphs
Before writing, outline each body paragraph using a consistent structure.
- Point: the claim this paragraph makes
- Evidence: a quotation, statistic, source or example
- Explanation: how the evidence supports the point
- Link: how this connects back to your thesis
Write, then revise
Write the first draft quickly without worrying about perfect wording. Then revise in separate passes: first for argument and structure, then for clarity, and finally for grammar and referencing.
Academisolve can explain grammar rules, suggest how to strengthen a paragraph’s logic, or clarify a concept you are writing about. The argument and the words in your essay should always be your own.
